ILLUSTRATION PROJECTS

AWS Loft Illustrations

London Loft

This was an illustration-based campaign that worked on in conjunction with another designer and illustrator while working for Filter Digital. The campaign was for a series of pop-up installations in cities around the world hosted by Amazon Web Services with the aim of engaging developers with their products and services. The campaign was dubbed as the “Pop-Up Loft” series.

A set design and illustration strategy had been created by AWS for the campaign. These included the specifications for the isometric illustration style, specified guidelines for creating new illustration assets, and a suite of pre-made illustrative assets, for our team to work with.

A set of assets had previously been created by another agency and handed over to AWS, but they were not satisfied with the results. AWS approached the team at Filter and tasked us with updating the overall layout of the illustration, to the extent of creating new visuals for inclusion in the creative.

For this project, I worked with another designer/illustrator to create new illustrative assets that represented London in a less generic way, and that incorporated some specific focus on elements of the tech center in east London near the Old Street Roundabout.

I was personally responsible for creating the visuals that represented the Old Street Roundabout, the famous Gherkin Skyscraper from central London, Nelson’s Column, Picadilly Circus, and the beehive-shaped Bezier Apartment Buildings - another landmark near the Old Street Roundabout.

I also created a graphic of St Paul’s Cathedral in the Loft isometric style, but it was omitted from the final version of the main creative.

Tel Aviv Loft

For Tel Aviv, we were tasked with creating a new design and suite of illustration elements from scratch.

This required doing some extra research in order to try to represent local elements of Tel Aviv. Fortunately, we had a bit of an “In” on this one, as the colleague I was working with for this project had actually been on vacation to Tel Aviv a few years previous.

Having collected our research, we created a rough layout of the final illustration and then divided up the creation of individual assets. My specific contributions were the representations of the Jaffa Clock Tower and nearby row of Roman-style columns, the Old Jaffa Port, the Poli House Hotel in Magen David Square (to represent the Bauhaus architecture prevalent throughout the city), and the Fire and Water fountain of Dizengoff Square.

Labyrinths Book Design Illustrations

These five illustrations were created for an academic project while I was attending Seattle Central Creative Academy. The completed project was to create and produce a physical, hard-bound book in its entirety; typography, page layout, printing, book jacket, illustration, and physical binding - Everything but actually writing the book.

The book contains dozens of short stories and essays. Many of them are strange and obscure enough to defy an illustrative treatment, but I chose ten of them as candidates for that very challenge. However, due to the time constraints of the project, I was only able to complete five.

My general approach to these illustrations was to focus on a specific, peculiar detail that was central to the story, and draw it in photorealistic detail with little, or no, other elements surrounding it. For two of the stories, however, I chose to deviate from this approach by making the composition a complete scene.

The illustrations were all hand drawn with graphite on paper, with some minor editing done in Photoshop.
